Hello ASOG community,
For airborne sensor operators and data technicians handling raw survey flightlines, getting from raw trajectories and point clouds to quality-checked deliverables often requires multiple standalone licenses and cumbersome data handoffs.
We have open-sourced a desktop application called LiDAR Workbench to streamline this process on local workstations.
The software was developed and tested on dual-sensor airborne survey data (RIEGL VUX-160 topographic and VQ-860G bathymetric sensors). Key features relevant to airborne workflows include:
- Trajectory-to-strip auto-matching (GPS time, coordinates, roll, pitch, yaw)
- Rigid boresight alignment and time-dependent trajectory drift optimization (knot point solving)
- Bathymetric water surface modeling and Snell's Law 3D refraction correction across flightlines
- Parallel multi-core noise filtering and automated tile generation
- Deep learning semantic classification (ASPRS schema) and Progressive TIN ground modeling
- Quality assurance rasters: point density, nominal pulse spacing, and multi-strip vertical difference maps
- DTM and DSM Export
The project is freely available on GitHub: https://github.com/bkabelik/lidar-workbench
We have also published an 11-part video masterclass walking through the complete operational workflow from raw flight strips to verified DTM outputs: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLG8LnhTJkPGI
Any feedback, operational use-cases, or collaboration from operators in the field is very welcome.
