IMSAR unveils longer-range SAR radar

ASOG Members, I just wanted to share this article (click image). The main purpose is to highlight the concept of Pod Sensor Systems. From my perspective, this tech concept (like Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) opens the door to many more uses of aerial remote-sensing be it civilian, public safety or defense.  What do you think, plus, what other affordable Pods are available today?

If you want to know more about the SAR system highlighted in this article, please reach out to Scott H....He's one of us! You can find him in the members' directory.

  • Hi Richard,

Excellent share! I agree...the sensor pod concept is a major plus capability in the aerial remote-sensing sector. I went to the information you linked, very nice system. One question, have you had any GPS line-of-sight issues when the system is attached under a large wing or body of the aircraft?

    Again, excellent share Richard!

  • I think ISR pods are a huge benefit when they can be fitted to the right aircraft. With systems such as UTC Aerospace's DB-110 and MS-177 providing a fantastic capability for very long range imagery from aircraft such as the U2, F-16's and Tornados then ultra high definition imagery from 100nm+ is possible - if you have the budget.  For many organisations this type of capability can only be dreamed of but there are pods out there that can enhance capability.

Recently a new pod has become available that will allow a high quality EO/IR video sensor to be combined with the Sentient Vision Systems ViDAR maritime wide area, persistent surveillance capability. This means that instead of using very expensive high end cameras to help operators see more, the pod system uses autonomous detection capabilities that highlight what the operator needs to see. This lightweight pod (approx. 25kg) can turn a small Cessna into a very capable maritime search platform or using the over land Moving Target Indication (MTI) capability it can find people who are lost or be used to track suspects.
